This course offers students the opportunity to develop an appreciation and understanding of the creation of media and how it affects society. In this course students will take a hands-on approach in learning this field of study by creating and/or managing a yearbook, a print newspaper, an online newspaper, school related websites, social media, and video content.

While students are registered for either journalism or yearbook, every student that takes one of these classes is considered to be part of the SOCES media program. All students will be contributing to every branch of the Media program and will be graded based on their work produced for each.

Yearbook

Students focusing on Yearbook will gain skills in one or more of the following areas: page design, advanced publishing techniques, writing, editing and photography while producing a creative, innovative yearbook which records school memories and events. Participants gain useful, real world skills in time management, marketing, teamwork, and design principles.

Journalism

Students focusing on Journalism will learn various skills and components to publishing a newspaper through print and online formats. Students in this class will also learn to objectively express interpretations of events with a high emphasis on journalism ethics, independence, accuracy, impartiality and truth. Journalism is not just writing though. It is the study of mass communications, newspapers, magazines, radio and television. Students will be asked to stay up-to-date on current events and hold discussions in class to analyze how those events impact their lives as citizens and journalists.

Broadcast Journalism & Digital Media

As an offshoot of print journalism, students focusing on Broadcast Journalism & Digital Media will develop and create video news content with a central focus on video production, video broadcasting, and media literacy while sharing the same standards as those students focusing on print media forms. Students will also focus on creating and managing various websites and social media accounts. Students will also learn how to produce videos using various software formats and applications. Students will also learn the various phases of television production and gain hands-on experience with video equipment and mobile technology. Students will learn the process of scriptwriting, storytelling, editing and how to capture the images that tell a story viewers will remember.
