AP Calculus AB is designed to be the equivalent of a first semester college calculus course devoted to topics in differential and integral calculus.

AP Calculus AB focuses on students’ understanding of calculus concepts and provide experience with methods and applications.

Using big ideas of calculus (e.g., modeling change, approximation and limits, and analysis of functions), the course becomes a cohesive whole, rather than a collection of unrelated topics.

Students regularly use technology (graphing calculator is necessary) to reinforce relationships among functions, to confirm written work, to implement experimentation, and to assist in interpreting results.

Before studying calculus, all students should complete the equivalent of four years of secondary mathematics designed for college-bound students: courses that should prepare them with a strong foundation in reasoning with algebraic symbols and working with algebraic structures.

Prospective calculus students should take  2 years of algebra, geometry, and precalculus with trigonometry.

Sherman Oaks CES has had a history of students excelling in AP calculus AB. The national yearly passing rate is approximately 50%. Sherman Oaks CES has always had a significantly higher passing rate.

Last school year, 2019-2020 during the pandemic and fully online teaching and learning our schools passing rate 66.7% with most scores of 4s and 5s. Prior years when teaching and learning in person, Sherman Oaks CES passing rate has been much higher than 2019-2020.
