JULIET

Heyyy guys! Sorry I haven’t updated my blog in a while, because my love life just exploded. As you probably already know I am *madly* in love with Romeo, who is unfortunately a Montague. Shhhhhhhh, DON’T TELL DAD!! He’s just sooooooo cute though! So here’s how our most recent encounter went down. So I was standing outside at my balcony minding my own business, talking to myself, and out of nowhere Romeo shows up! WHHHAAAAAAT! The most handsome man in Verona, just HAPPENS to be in my garden. I was mortified! He heard me gush out my feelings about him! How awkward...but being the sexiest beast in Verona of course he’s a smooth talker. Immediately the compliments start rolling in. Eventually I told him to swear that he loves me or else I wouldn’t believe this was real. And he did! I was about to go say “Goodnight”, but he stopped me and asked if we could exchange vows......as in marriage vows. Long story short we got engaged that night. Next morning, I sent my nurse to go and find Romeo to ask when and where we should get married. It took her THREE HOURS. That crazy woman. When she finally made it back, my nurse took FOREVER to tell me what we were going to do, but eventually she told me that we are getting married in Friar Laurence’s cell tonight. I was so excited I couldn’t breathe! So the two of us went to Friar Laurence’s cell and there he was, the love of my life, about to be mine forever. In retrospect, Friar Laurence seemed a bit awkward by the sparks flying between us, but we were so focused on each other that the world around us sort of blurred. We said our vows, and now I am the happiest girl in the world, with a loving husband by my side. The world is our oyster, and nothing can take us apart.

STATUS: “What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot, nor arm, nor face, nor any other part belonging to a man. O, be some other name! What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. So Romeo would, were he not Romeo called, retain that dear perfection which he owes.” (Juliet, I:ii, Ln: 40-46)

REPLY: In this quote we can see how Juliet is trying to almost reason with herself that it does not matter that Romeo is a Montague. She talks about a rose smelling just as sweet if it were not called a rose at all, and that the names we give objects and ideas and even people (like Montague) have no real correlation to the quality or traits residing in the thing we are addressing. This is further shown by how she realises that a name, such as Montague, is not a physical part of a person. Meaning that removing the name of something does not actually change the thing itself, and that the name holds no physical value.

STATUS: “Therefore pardon me, and not impute this yielding to light love, which the dark night hath so discovered.” (Juliet, I:ii, Ln: 104-106)

REPLY: Here, Juliet was just talking of how Romeo had overheard her confess her deep love for him, and fears that he thinks she is not serious about her feelings because she fell in love with him so quickly. When she says “light love” she is referring to the fact that he must think her love is small and light-hearted. It is also interesting to note that it might have been a line used as symbolism of Romeo and Juliet’s love being the light, trying to fight off the dark which is their un-approving families.

the NURSE

Today has been incredibly eventful. I have been running around all day. Juliet seems to

think I am some sort of young, spry messenger that she can just send all over Verona. She had me running all about, looking for her Romeo. Speaking of Romeo, he and Juliet are getting married today! That Romeo is a Montague however, and I have a feeling she probably should have chosen someone else to fall in love with. I mean, Paris is handsome too, and probably would cause less of a problem than Romeo does. But, he makes her happy, and that’s all I really care about. Either way, Romeo isn’t ugly and is actually more fair than Paris, if I do say so myself. He had some nice toned legs that Juliet is going to really enjoy, after they get married of course. I can tell that Romeo will make her very happy. That riffraff that he calls friends are so rude! I was simply minding my own business and that Mercutio fellow had the gall to call me a boat! A boat of all things! I’ll have you know, I look very elegant and regal. I have to say though, I can't believe how fast my little Juliet is growing up! It seems as if it was only weeks ago that she was a little babe. And yet she's getting married, to a handsome man like Romeo, no less! I wish her the best of luck! However, I cannot keep writing. My arm droops from exhaustion! I need to remember to never do a “little favor” for her ever again! I'm so sore from jaunting all about Verona! I should go and rest for now.

STATUS: “Well, sir; my mistress is the sweetest lady—Lord, Lord! when 'twas a little prating thing:—O, there is a nobleman in town, one Paris, that would fain lay knife aboard; but she, good soul, had as lief see a toad, a very toad, as see him. I anger her sometimes and tell her that Paris is the properer Man.” page 222 lines 174-179

REPLY:  The nurse tells Romeo about his competition, the suitor, Paris trying to woo and marry Juliet. She also tells Romeo that she would prefer the marriage of Juliet and Paris, but she support’s Juliet’s choice of wanting Romeo, as long as she’s happy, the nurse will do whatever she can to help. She also talks about how Juliet is hellbent on getting together with Romeo, and refuses to see Paris. She states that she knows that it would be much easier if Juliet just got married with Paris, but she goes to Romeo since she cares about how Juliet feels.

STATUS: “Well, you have made a simple choice; you know not
how to choose a man: Romeo! no, not he; though his
face be better than any man's, yet his leg excels
all men's; and for a hand, and a foot, and a body,
though they be not to be talked on, yet they are
past compare: he is not the flower of courtesy,
but, I'll warrant him, as gentle as a lamb. “ page 224 lines 38-43

REPLY:  This quote states that even though, the nurse would rather prefer Paris, she sees the good in Romeo and is very fond of him. She describes how handsome he is and how he’s a good choice for Juliet but, as she doesn't like the family feud, she thinks that Juliet should rather marry someone that is not a family enemy. She also seems to be a very good judge of character. Even though Romeo’s friends make fun of her, she can tell that Romeo is not a bad person. She is not blinded by her own feelings and instead tries to see what kind of person Romeo is, for Juliet.

STATUS: “Then hie you hence to Friar Laurence' cell;
There stays a husband to make you a wife:
Now comes the wanton blood up in your cheeks, They'll be in scarlet straight at any news.
Hie you to church; I must another way,
To fetch a ladder, by the which your love
Must climb a bird's nest soon when it is dark:
I am the drudge and toil in your delight,
But you shall bear the burden soon at night.
Go; I'll to dinner: hie you to the cell.” page 225 line 67-75

REPLY:  This quote states the nurse talking about the plans of what is going to go down that day. I think this quote is rather important because, as as messenger, the nurse gives the audience information about when and how the marriage will take place. This also shows how happy the Nurse is that Juliet is getting married. She mentions that she is the “drudge and toil in your delight” perhaps referring to when she went to contact Romeo.

MERCUTIO

Oh, Romeo the one falling for a such an unwise girl, or should I even call her one, and making poor Romeo so Lovesick he can’t even blink an eye without dreaming of her. Her eyes as bright as the fire in hell which is so distracting to him that he is being pulled down by the unholy spirit that Rosaline is. His heart shattered, seeing him so broken is slightly comical with him being the one left without the love of another and soon coming back with the undying love so soon. Not returning from the party all night seeming to be happier than ever and show he has fallen in love with that shattered heart that Rosaline caused making his eyes once see again a beautiful young enemy of us. I have not told him yet that the skilled fighter, Tybalt, would like to brawl with this young Romeo for crashing the  forbidden party. That’s fighting is not like any other, I’m not saying it's a great style of fighting, it's different and it shouldn't be taken seriously because it is like a song and no new fighting is good fighting that is used especially for him. Then this lady seen to come out of the age of dinosaurs wants to take the fair Romeo and talk about his loved enemy, Juliet, to soon be married. This woman, like a ship, uses words bigger than her which hurts me to even hear, I mocked her to show that she should learn the meaning. I say Romeo is no longer filled with sorrow he is filled with love and happiness.

He fights as you sing pricksong-keeps time, distance, and proportion; rests me minim rest, one, two, and the third in your bosom! the very butcher of a silk button, a duelist, a duelist! a gentleman of the very first house, of the first and second cause. Ah, the immortal passado! the punto reverso! the hay!(Act 2, Scene 4: Line 19 - Line 24)

REPLY: Hello Mercutio, I see you're very interested in Tybalt’s new fighting style. You humor me very much! I enjoyed how you compared his fighting style to a dance, you're somehow able to put comedy into your very observative self! To imagine you could compare his fighting style to a dance, you must have seen it and did some sort of studying, meaning you are a very clever but smart man. I can't take enough of your jokes, you're too good at making them! You must be really quick-witted too, otherwise how could you come up with such good jokes so quickly?! I can also understand how important this is too! I mean, I never knew that Tybalt was ever such a good fighter! Now I know I should be careful angering him, and now I also know that I should prepare to see a good fight soon, otherwise, why would you hype us up for such an interesting fighter.

Status: “An old hare hoar, and an old hare hoar, is very good meat in Lent. But a hare that is hoar, is too much for a score when it hoars ere it be spent.” (Act 2, Scene 4: Line 118-123)

Reply: Hi Mercutio, I’ve noted that you really like to mess around with even complete strangers just for the sake of making Romeo laugh and lightening the mood. So much so that you even sang what seems like a made up song to a nurse you had never met before. You must be really used to making up jokes on the spot. It’s odd to think that you treat even strangers like “skains mates.” I find it quite clever how you made a pun using the words hare and hoar, sure it’s quite insulting that you called that nurse an old prostitute, but that was still some really clever wordplay you did with that song.

FRIAR LAURENCE

Today was truly a long day for me. Not only did I learn that Romeo did not sleep at all the night before, but that he was with his new love Juliet, the daughter of Capulet, and has forgotten all about his once dear Rosaline. He goes on to say that he is truly in love with her and that she loves him back. He then asks me to marry them. Although at first I was bewildered at the thought of this, I began to realize that the marriage could be very beneficial. If the only two children of the Montagues and Capulets got married, the families’ feud may be able to come to an end. In hopes of this, I agreed to help Romeo and let him run off full of joy and spirit.

When Romeo came back to my cell later that day, I hoped aloud that this marriage will not be deeply regretted in the future and that the heavens can look down on this marriage with delight and not misery. I then began to tell Romeo to be careful since he seemed to fall in love with Juliet rather quickly and because of this their love may not last. I compared his love for Juliet to gunpowder and the fire that ignites it, both destroyed when they come into quick contact with one another leaving only the ashes that are left behind. This kind of love also reminded me of the sweetness of honey and how if you indulge too much in it your stomach will face the consequences. I warn Romeo that he should not fall in love with Juliet too fast or too slow in order to make sure that this love can truly last long.

Finally, Juliet arrives. She greets me kindly and then goes straight to her beloved Romeo. Although at this point I have been with Juliet only for a short while, I know how deep in love Romeo and Juliet are with one another. Their words are very heartfelt and the feeling of warmth seemed to fill my cell as they looked into each other’s eyes. As they continue their conversation and keep telling one another they love each other dearly, I interrupted, scared to leave the two lovers alone before they exchange their wedding vows.

STATUS: “Therefore thy earliness doth me assure/ Thou art uproused with some distemp’rature; / Or if not so, then here I hit it right - / Our Romeo hath not been in bed tonight” (R&J; II:iii

ln.39-42).

REPLY: When Romeo came to me, the first thing I noticed was that he had not slept at all last night. This is due to the fact that I know older people have trouble sleeping during the night because of the many worries they have, and that its unusual for a young man like Romeo to be awake this early in the morning if he does not have care in the world. Romeo looked tired but very content. I do care about Romeo and know very much about him, so it made me wonder as to why he had not slept at all last night. At first I thought it might be because of his love for Rosaline. However, I soon found out that his lack of sleep was because of a new beauty he met the night before, Juliet. Although it is troubling to see him in love with a Capulet, I’m glad it has cured him from his previous depressed state.

STATUS: “In one respect I’ll thy assistant be;/ For this alliance may so happy prove/ To turn your households’ rancor to pure love” (R&J, II: iii ln 90-92).

REPLY: I was stunned to hear that Romeo confessed to me that he had forgotten all about his once dear to him Rosaline when he met Juliet, the only daughter of Capulet, the man who Romeo’s family loathes. I was quick to scold him about his actions of going from one girl to the next, claiming he just loves Juliet for her looks and beauty and not from his heart. Not only that, Romeo tells me about his plan for me to marry him to Juliet, a girl he met not so long ago. Although I was bewildered when I first heard Romeo’s request, something came into my mind that made me feel at ease with the current situation. If Romeo and Juliet get married, their families hate for one another may cease as they see their children happy in love, hand in hand. This made me reluctantly agree to wed the two young loves in hopes that at the end it may help bring peace to their two households who have fought with one another for too long.

STATUS: The sweetest honey/ Is loathsome in his own deliciousness/ And in the taste confounds the appetite. / Therefore love moderately: long love doth so; Too swift arrives as tardy as slow” (R&J, II:vi ln. 11-15).

REPLY: I made sure to warn Romeo not to fall too much in love for Juliet because it may cause the love between them to quickly end. I related Romeo’s love for Juliet to honey because honey is sweet and divine but if you indulge yourself too much in the gold syrup, you will have to face the consequences that comes along with it. I want Romeo to love in moderation and know that loving each other too fast is as bad as loving each other too slow. My goal is to help Romeo through this and make sure he is safe because I truly care very deeply about Romeo and desire for his relationship with Juliet to be able to last long with the both of them still very much in love with each other.

STATUS: “Come, come with me, and we will make short work: / For, by your leaves, you shall not stay alone/ Till Holy Church incorporate two in one” (R&J, II:vi ln 35-37).

REPLY: After seeing Romeo and Juliet talk about their deep love for one another and exchanging heartfelt words, I became very worried. If I leave Romeo alone with Juliet they might do things that the heavens would look down upon if done before marriage, like having sex. Because of this, I want to get them married as soon as possible. I care for Romeo and will do what I can to make this marriage happen and for him to be happy and with the love of his life, Juliet.

ROMEO

It has been a wonderful day with my newly beloved wife, Juliet. When I met Juliet at her balcony in the Capulet garden on that peaceful night after the party, she looked at me with her eyes shining like the nights stars. At first she did not know that I was there, until I spoke to her. She was quite embarrassed that I had overheard her confess her love of me. As we stood there, talking to her was like a dream. While talking, I grew to love her so much I had decided that I would give up my name as a Montague if I had the chance. She said the same and that left me more happier than Rosaline could ever make me. Although our love is forbidden, we wanted to marry as soon as possible. However, it would have to be in secret because my parents would never let me marry a Capulet of all people. I went home after that night and went to see my trusty friend and father-figure Friar Laurence. At first when I told him that I wanted him to marry me and Juliet, he was confused because he thought I still loved Rosaline. Luckily, he quickly realized that I no longer care for that worthless girl. Although I was very surprised that he agreed very quickly after his realization about Rosaline, he said something about peace in Verona between the two families, but it didn’t make much sense. Later that day, I met up with Benvolio and Mercutio and they teased me about leaving them behind the day before. We ran into Juliet’s Nurse and they began to make fun of the poor lady by calling  her an ancient lady as they left. Once they left for supper, I told the Nurse that Juliet and I are going to be married at Friar Laurence’s cell in the afternoon. The excuse I created was that she was going to confess and be forgiven for her sins. I thought that this was rather clever of myself. I said goodbye to the Nurse and thanked her for sending the message to Juliet. Later on, Friar Laurence and myself walked into his cell and we talked until my beautiful Juliet made an appearance. We exchanged vows and now I may call her my wife. My sweet, wonderful Juliet, I love her so much.

WHAT'S ON MY MIND

STATUS: “My name, dear saint, is hateful to myself, Because it is an enemy to thee.”  (R&J II:ii In. 55-56)

REPLY: In this quote Romeo is speaking to Juliet after the party.  He tells her that his name is hateful to himself because they come from rival families.  Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet.  They know their parents and family wouldn’t approve of their love for each other.  Romeo shows that he is willing to sacrifice everything he has for the name of love.

STATUS: “Then plainly know my heart’s dear  love is set On the fair daughter of rich Capulet; As mine on hers, so hers is set on mine, And all combined, save what thou must combine By holy marriage. When, and where, and how We met, we wooed, and made exchange of vow, I’ll tell thee as we pass; but this I pray, That thou consent to marry us today.” (R&J, II:iii In. 57-64)

REPLY: This quote demonstrates the love that Romeo feels for Juliet and that they reciprocate the love. Romeo is asking Friar Laurence if he can have consent (permission) to marry Juliet. This shows he’s a very respectful and caring man to the people he cared about. He could have just married her without Friar Laurence’s permission but he asked him if he can. This shows that Romeo values Friar Laurence very deeply.

STATUS: “I have night’s cloak to hide me from their sights; And but thou love me, let them find me here. My life is better ended by their hate Than death prorogued, wanting of thy love.” (R&J, II:ii In. 75-78)

REPLY:  In this quote Romeo is talking to Juliet from the ground because he sneaked inside the Capulet’s Orchard. It shows that he is very reckless when he’s in love and that he would be willing to die if Juliet doesn’t reciprocate his love. Earlier, Romeo was in love with Rosaline but she didn’t reciprocate their love. So he is pretty desperate to be loved in this quote. Romeo is a very reckless and foolish lover.

STATUS:  “What wilt thou tell her, nurse?  Thou dost not mark me.”  (R&J, II:iiii ln. 152)

REPLY: In this quote Juliet has sent the nurse to speak to Romeo about their marriage.  The nurse finds him messing around with his friends.  Romeo is worried the nurse will say something because he wants to keep a good image of himself to Juliet.  This shows how Romeo cares very deeply about Juliet’s opinion of him because he wants to be perfect in her eyes. Romeo is very cautious person to the people he cares about.

BENVOLIO

Today me and Mercutio were hanging out looking for our good old pal Romeo. Boy where can Romeo be anyways, he is still crying about his rejection from Rosaline. Man at least I got Mercutio . He won't leave me for no girl. Mercutio always make me laugh. He was coming up with jokes about Romeo’s love life. The only hope Romeo has with a ny girl is if the girl get hit by cupid’s arrow. Haha!! Later this day, he still haven’t found Romeo. He is not at his father's house either. But i found a letter from Tybalt, the kinsman to old capulet. Oh, I remember that hot- headed Tybalt. He wanted to pick a fight with me. This letter is a challenge from Tybalt to fight Romeo. I believe Romeo will accept Tybalt’s challenge and fight him. Finally, we found Romeo and all three of us caught with each other. As we were making we met up with this old lady and her servant. I wanted some action so I made fun of this old lady by using big words that she doesn’t understand at her age.

STATUS: P.208 line 37 :“Blind is his love, and best befits the dark.”

REPLY: Romeo is just so blind towards love. He falls so easily. When I said “beat befits the dark” I mean that he’s always in the dark and never has his eyes focused on something but he’s also someone who i love deeply but let’s see how this works

STATUS: P.217 line 11-12: “Nay,he will answer the letter’s master, how he dares, being dared.”

REPLY: P.217 line 11-12: In this quote, Benvolio is saying that Romeo will accept Tybalt’s challenge.

STATUS: P.207 line 5: “He ran this way, and leapt this orchard wall call, good Mercutio.”

REPLY: This quote is saying that Benvolio knew where Romeo was. He was telling Mercutio that after Romeo had ran away that he jumped the orchard wall to get to the Capulet house where he could find Juliet. We picked this quote because it is telling us that Benvolio was the only one who knew where Romeo was going and we thought that, that was important because Romeo is one of the most important characters and the fact that Benvolio was the only one who knew where he was and he had to tell everyone, it was an important to the story.
